Find & Support Black-Owned Businesses With These Apps & Websites

Following the police killing of George Floyd last month, protests have broken out across the country. We encourage everyone to join the fight by marching in local protests, signing online petitions, donating, and calling your elected officials, but there’s another way to fight systemic racial inequality, and that’s by putting your money where your mouth is. Make a commitment to support Black-owned businesses in your area.

Right now, Twitter users are asking their friends and followers to share their own or their favorite Black-owned businesses. While sifting through social media responses is one way to find spots to support, there are a lot of tweets containing the phrase “Black-owned businesses.” So if you’re looking to find a Black-owned business quickly — perhaps in time for take-out dinner tonight — there are also many useful resources online and in the app store that can help.

‘I was heartbroken, I never thought I would find someone like her’

The BBC’s weekly The Boss series profiles different business leaders from around the world. This week we speak to Justin McLeod, founder and chief executive of dating app Hinge.

When recovering alcoholic Justin McLeod set up his dating app, it was to help him get over his heartbreak.

Five years earlier, his college sweetheart, the woman he thought was the love of his life, had split up with him because of his drink problem.

He had subsequently gone to rehab and successfully sobered up, but he had not been able to move on romantically.

Not comfortable going into bars because of his addiction issue, he started work on Hinge in 2011 to help him find a new partner. At the time he was 27, and doing an MBA (master of business administration) at Harvard Business School in Boston.

“I was heartbroken, and I never thought I would find someone like

When coronavirus closed schools, some Detroit students went missing from class. These educators had to find them.

frank lamjus

DETROIT — Principal Jacqueline Dungey was searching for one of her kindergartners.

She’d called every number she had for his family. She’d sent urgent notes to his parents. She’d reached out to a social worker who’d worked with his family in the past.

But more than a month after the coronavirus threat forced the New Paradigm Loving Academy in Detroit to move its classes online, the little boy, Legend, hadn’t been in touch with his teachers. His family had not shown up for the meals the school distributes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. No one seemed to know where he was.

Dungey was determined to find him.

“I just wanted to make sure he was safe,” she said.

Legend was among about a dozen Loving students who went missing in the weeks after COVID-19 began battering this community. Panic, sickness and death sent many Detroiters into financial and emotional turmoil, scattering

Am I queer enough? How to find your Pride online

frank lamjus

Welcome to 🏳️‍🌈TNW Pride 2020🏳️‍🌈. We’ll be covering tech-related Pride stories and putting a much needed spotlight on the LGBTQPIA+ STEM community and its history all throughout the month of June.

I’ve been out for exactly two weeks and, let me tell you, I’m exhausted.

Before June, I was a technology journalist. Now I’m a queer journo. It’s not an official distinction. I’m not getting paid for it, but I sure am being taxed. My time is taxed when I’m forced to choose between using my voice to advance the struggle for queer equality or focusing on personal endeavors like my career and family. And my time is also taxed by bigots whether I ignore, engage, or attempt to educate them.

It’s been 14 days, and if it weren’t for Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, and thousands of online reporters, bloggers, and activists I’d be lost already. I’m not even
